Introduction
Overview
When booking a flight and car package on Expedia, travelers were presented with two separate insurance modules at checkout. This redundant pattern resulted from implementation trade-offs rather than user needs, creating a disjointed experience.
Problem Definition
Auditing the current experience with basic UX heuristics in mind, a few observations jumped out which showed up as problems for a traveller and a business opportunity therein.
Mapping out what needs solving
Observations
Users make similar choice twice
Information overload for Checkout
No easy way to bundle both options
Complete benefits list unavailable in view
Confusing price units: per person vs per day
Traveler Problem
Adds unnecessary friction to journey
Can't protect entire trip in one decision
Must select insurance twice during booking
Potential error if I don't say 'No' or 'Yes' twice
Business Opportunity
Nudge travelers to add both products
Remove double forced choice
XD Risks
Too many benefits = text heavy module
Cognitive load delays selection
Multiple choice paths increase complexity
Steeper learning curve than current flow
